Kirk Delman & Michael Kotzen
Tumbao de Fuego / Tumbao of Fire (2008)
Padauk, wenge, walnut, maple, birch.
This large cajón is the result of a collaboration between Michael Kotzen and studio partner Kirk Delman. It is contstructed from Padauk, chosen for its excellent acoustic properties and striking orange hue. Kirk, a sculptor and furniture maker, contributed precisely executed Wenge inlays and sculpted edges that enhance both form and function. Integrated legs elevate the instrument, enabling playing from an external seat and enhancing projection. The cajón delivers exceptionally deep, resonant bass tones with clear articulation across the frequency range. A pair of Kotz Slap Pads provides additional contrasting accent tones.
