Luna Rumbera / Moon Rumba (2025)
Mahogany, steel, birch, mdf, rosewood, pvc
This unique cajón originated from an oversized stainless steel mixing bowl, a gift from a friend who saw its potential as a musical instrument. I flattened the rim and attached a wooden hoop and tapa - the playing surface - transforming the bowl into a functional cajón. This version stands out with its significantly larger cajón base and oversized hoop and tapa. To play, the musician stands, hands striking the mounted cajón and foot working the pedal in a dynamic, rhythmic dance. Its distinctive half-moon shape inspired the name Luna Rumbera, a nod to the Afro-Cuban tradition of the cajón, where rhythm, movement, and culture unite in vibrant celebration.
