Ecos del Frutero / Echoes of the Fruit Seller (2015/2025)
Vintage produce crate, birch, alder, maple

Made from a repurposed produce crate, this cajón carries the echoes of its past life into a new musical form. One of several theories about the cajón’s origin suggests that it was originally made from repurposed shipping crates—often used for produce or fish—transformed into percussion instruments by Afro-Peruvian musicians.

Elevated on a custom stand, the instrument is designed for standing performance, allowing the player to interact with it in a comfortable, natural way. Its laminated birch tapa (playing surface) reveals a surprising range of tones. Unlike a traditional cajón, sound escapes through the natural gaps and openings of the crate, creating a resonance that feels raw, open, and expressive—like street rhythms carrying through a marketplace.
